Sun is a source of life, but it can also cause serious diseases. Today this is the most common cancer worldwide, and its numbers continue to rise year after year.

There are two main groups: melanoma, which are cancers that develop from a specific kind of skin cells known as melanocytes, and another group encompassing all malignant skin tumours other than melanoma.

Treatments for this kind of cancer

External treatment

External treatment enables the destruction of pre-malignant or incipient malignant lesions. These are physical treatments with electrocoagulation or cryotherapy, and immunomodulators.

Surgery

This has the purpose of both diagnosing and removing the tumour. Depending on its characteristics, the area removed will be larger or smaller, according to a series of internationally established protocols.

Pharmacology

Pharmacological treatment encompasses clinical trials, metastasis treatment and complementary treatment.

Radiotherapy

Radiotherapy is a therapeutic weapon rarely used when starting to treat melanoma. The material resources available at Onkologikoa are: linear and IMRT accelerators, helical tomotherapy, and high- and low-dose-rate brachytherapy.
