Kidney cancer accounts for 2-3% of malignant tumours in adults.

It is two times more common in men than in women, and the majority of cases are diagnosed between the fourth and sixth decade of life. As far as risk factors are concerned, we would mention tobacco, exposure to certain chemical products, obesity, the indiscriminate use of painkillers, or the renal abscess disease acquired by chronic dialysis patients.

Treatments for this kind of cancer

Surgery

An operation may be carried out to remove part or all of the kidney. Other alternative treatments can also be used, such as arterial embolization, cryoablation, radiofrequency ablation, or nephrectomy.

Medical or systemic treatment

When dealing with advanced kidney cancer, surgery is not curative; we therefore recommend a treatment with drugs that act globally and reach all organs in the body.

Targeted therapy

Targeted therapy uses drugs and other substances capable of identifying and eliminating cancer cells without damaging the normal cells. Although they don't cure the disease, in the majority of cases they prevent it from progressing, or can achieve its remission.

Current immunotherapy

Nivolumab is a drug which inhibits the mechanism that enables tumours to "hide" from the immune system, thereby enabling their action against tumour cells. It is administered as a second option, after the failure of a first targeted therapy, where it has shown benefits in regard to survival.
