Head and neck cancer

This type of cancer represents 5% of all tumours and is predominantly found in men, although the rising tendency of women to smoke is causing an increase in the number of female patients.

The average age of its appearance is over the age of 50, and its main risk factors are tobacco and alcohol, although some cases are caused by a diet lacking vitamins A and C, poor oral hygiene, the rubbing of poorly adjusted dental prostheses, and infections.

From the moment you contact Onkologikoa, a group of experts in the different kinds of head and neck cancer will set about personally studying, diagnosing and treating your case, using state-of-the-art technologies. Because people are above disease.

Treatments for this kind of cancer

Surgery

This is the primary treatment in early tumours and can mean less radiation and chemotherapy later on. Surgery involves, on the one hand, removal of the tumour, and sometimes also removal of the cervical ganglia.

Radiation

Radiation therapy consists of treating the disease with high-energy beams. It is a local treatment exclusively affecting the irradiated area. The treatment is administered daily, and the duration of each session is between five and ten minutes.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy for head and neck tumours is usually administered intravenously and at set intervals of time.

Monoclonal antibodies

Cetuximab is a monoclonal antibody targeting the epidermal growth factor expressed in the majority of head and neck tumours; it is related to tumour proliferation and progress.

Immunotherapy

Tumour cells have the ability to create a blockage in our immune system. Immunotherapy can disactivate this blockage, enabling our immune system to fight tumour cells.
