Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma was the first tumour disease to be recognised as a work-related disease.

This is a very rare tumour type originating in the linings of the lung (the pleura). Despite its existence in only a very few cases, the majority have been in direct contact with asbestos. Although these are not generally tumours with a tendency to metastasize in distant sites, the prognostic is extremely poor, with the exception of cases where complete surgery is possible.

One of the priorities of all people working at Onkologikoa is to ensure that the patient knows what lies ahead of them from the very beginning. And, from then on, studying all of the alternatives available for treating the tumour.

Treatments for this kind of cancer

Surgery

This is the curative treatment par excellence; however, given that almost all of the tumours are diagnosed at an inoperable stage, surgery is rarely carried out. In some cases it can be used as palliative treatment.

Radiotherapy

Can be used to palliate local symptoms.

Chemotherapy:

Programmes based on platin plus Pemetrexed are the standard treatment for mesothelioma and have demonstrated increased survival outcomes compared to the administration of cisplatin by itself.

Anti-angiogenesis inhibitors

The addition of a monoclonal antibody such as bevacizumab, with an antigiogenic effect, has improved chemotherapy outcomes; however, each case must be individually assessed.
