Liver cancer

The most common liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma. Factors associated to its origin are infection with the Hepatitis B and C virus, cirrhosis and certain toxins.

The patient may show either no manifestation or vague symptoms: appetite loss, weight loss, fever, fatigue, weakness, stomach pain. Their characteristics in imaging tests such as ultrasound, CAT or MRI scans can establish whether or not biopsies are necessary to confirm the diagnosis.

One of the priorities of all people working at Onkologikoa is to ensure that the patient knows what lies ahead of them from the very beginning. Keeping them properly informed on how our team of specialists will treat their liver cancer. We also use the most advanced treatments, and the latest in leading-edge technology.

Treatments for this kind of cancer

Surgery

Partial removal of the liver in patients with sufficient functional reserve is the most appropriate treatment for controlling the disease. Patients with insufficient functional reserve may be candidates for a liver transplant.

Locoregional therapies

These are uses for patients for whom surgery is not an option. They include: ablation with physical agents: radiofrequency (heat), cryoablation (cold); electromagnetic agents (microwaves); and chemical agents (ethanol, acetic acid).

Systemic therapies (Chemotherapy, Immunotherapy)

Different agents such as multikinase inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies are useful in patients with extrahepatic disease or for whom locoregional therapy treatment has been unsuccessful.
